What is it and what is the cause?
Blackheads are a type of spot, which appear on the surface of the skin. These spots occur when oil and bacteria have been trapped under the skin, causing inflammation. As the skin over the spot breaks, the contents become exposed and oxidises, causing the open spot to turn black.
There are many reasons why blackheads occur; many blame dirty skin but while this doesn’t help, it’s not always the only cause. Taking certain precautions can help. A good diet which contains plenty of fruit and vegetables and less fatty, processed foods such as burgers, to strengthen the skin’s capacity to fight infection and heal itself as well as a good skincare routine that can remove surface grime, make-up and dead skin cells which create congestion.
Treaments which de-congest the skin followed by a good skin care regime to prevent further blackheads are the mainstay of treatment.
Microdermabrasion – A deep, exfoliating treatment which uses vacuum to remove blackheads, (even the most stubborn) and remove dead skin cells and debris from the skin surface leaving it smoother and clearer. A little redness occurs for an hour of so after treatment. We also offer extraction to remove blackheads on and around the nose. £45 per session, extraction £10
Skin Peels – do a similar job but in a different way using chemicals which penetrate under the skin to loosen the debris and dissolve the skin plug. A little redness occurs for an hour or so after treatment but usually settles after that period. From £65 per treatment.
Dermalux – A light therapy treatment to destroy bacteria deep in the skin. £40 per session .
