Guide to using Acids in your Skincare routine
In light of our brand new Dermaquest Resurfacer treatments, it can be slightly overwhelming with the choices of facial acids now available. To start, identify your skin type, then choose the acid that suits your needs.
Glycolic acids are part of the fruit acid range (AHA) these are one of the most popular
exfoliants used in peels, toners and cleansers. These penetrate deeply into the skin as they
are water soluble and help with concerns such as aging, surface pigmentation, boosting
collagen, congestion and smoothing rough or textured skin. Not suitable for sensitive skin
types
Salicylic acid (BHA) is most known for its use with blemishes and breakouts and is most
suitable for acne prone skin. This acid can penetrate deeply into the skin removing clogged
pores, excess oil, dead skin cells and other debris. Salicylic soothes irritated skin, reduces
redness and smooth skin texture.
Citric acid is another (AHA) used for its gentle exfoliation and skin cell turnover, this acid is
suitable for most skin types excluding extra sensitive skin types. Citric acid contains
antioxidant properties which help to unclog pores, even out skin tone, help with
environmental damage and improve firmness and elasticity.
Lactic Acid is also part of the fruit acid group (AHA) suitable for all skin types, as this is
another water soluble acid it helps with superficial pigmentation, brightening, hydration and
fine lines and surface wrinkles.
Malic acid (AHA) is a lesser-known acid but is gentler on the AHA scale. This acid
encourages cell turnover and can improve fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture, and
reduce superficial pigmentation.
Mandelic acid is also an AHA which is similar to Glycolic acid but does not penetrate quite as
deep. This acid is used for more oily, greasy skin types and can be less irritating.
This Acid is used for exfoliating, increasing cell turnover, promotes collagen, suppressing
excess oil and antiaging benefits.
Gluconolactone is a PHA which is used for either more mature skin or super sensitive skin
types used as a mild exfoliator and an alternative to AHA and BHA’s. It can help get rid of
excess oils, hydrate the skin, exfoliates dead skin cells and brightens skin
